Check Engine Light Diagnostics

Check Engine Light On? Get Answers, Not Guesses.

A warning light is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Our Troy service team evaluates the symptoms, fault information and vehicle systems to help identify the right repair for your Buick, GMC or other vehicle.

Let’s find out what’s behind the light.

Tell us when the light appeared, whether it flashes, and what has changed in how your vehicle runs.

FIRST, UNDERSTAND THE WARNING

Steady or Flashing? The Difference Matters.

A check engine light can appear for a range of reasons. The light’s behavior, dashboard messages and how the vehicle is running help determine how urgently to respond.

STEADY LIGHT

Arrange a diagnostic evaluation.

A steady light means the vehicle has detected a condition that needs attention. If the vehicle otherwise seems to run normally, review your owner’s manual and arrange service promptly. If there are serious drivability symptoms, stop safely and seek advice before continuing.

FLASHING LIGHT

Treat it as urgent.

A flashing check engine light can indicate a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. Reduce risk by stopping safely, following your vehicle’s warning instructions and arranging professional assistance; do not keep driving a vehicle that is running poorly.

Always follow the specific warnings and instructions in your vehicle’s owner’s manual; other dashboard alerts may require immediate action.

BEYOND THE SCAN TOOL

A Code Points to a System. Testing Finds the Cause.

A diagnostic trouble code identifies a monitored system or condition—not necessarily a failed part. An oxygen-sensor-related code, for example, could involve an exhaust leak, damaged wiring, an incorrect fuel mixture or the sensor itself. Replacing a part based only on its code description can leave the original concern unresolved.

What professional testing may include: stored and pending codes, freeze-frame operating conditions (when supported), live sensor readings, electrical measurements and applicable manufacturer diagnostic procedures. The tests depend on the fault and vehicle.

01 — LISTEN

Start with symptoms and conditions

When it happens, how the vehicle behaves and any other warning messages provide valuable context.

02 — REVIEW

Review codes, freeze-frame and live data

Diagnostic trouble codes and related data help narrow the systems requiring investigation.

03 — VERIFY

Verify with circuit and component tests

Appropriate vehicle-specific checks help distinguish a component fault from related wiring or system conditions.

04 — EXPLAIN

Explain findings and repair options

The goal is a repair recommendation tied to findings, not guesswork based on a generic code definition.

WHAT CAN TRIGGER THE LIGHT?

Different Symptoms. Different Systems.

Symptoms help narrow the investigation, but they cannot confirm a repair by themselves. These are possible systems to investigate—not diagnoses.

Rough idle or shaking

Ignition misfires, air/fuel control or other engine-running concerns.

Reduced acceleration

Engine management, airflow, fuel delivery or reduced-power operation.

Higher fuel consumption

Fuel control, sensors or changes in engine operating conditions.

Warning after refueling

Evaporative-emissions sealing, including a fuel cap where fitted.

Hesitation while accelerating

Ignition, fuel, intake or sensor-related conditions.

Light with no obvious symptoms

Intermittent faults and monitored emissions systems can trigger warnings without noticeable drivability changes.

GM-FOCUSED SERVICE

Your Buick or GMC Is More Than a Collection of Trouble Codes.

Our team includes GM World Class Technicians and ASE-certified technicians; individual credentials vary. On Buick, GMC, Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles, applicable GM service procedures help technicians interpret how control modules, sensors, emissions systems and drivability conditions relate—not just what a generic code description says.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FAQS

Diagnostic Questions, Answered.

Know what your warning means, how codes are used and what to expect from a diagnostic appointment.

Can I drive with my check engine light on?

It depends on the warning and the vehicle’s behavior. A steady light without other symptoms may allow you to arrange prompt service under the guidance in your owner’s manual. A flashing light, loss of power, overheating or severe shaking requires more urgent attention; stop safely and avoid further driving if unsafe.

Is a free code scan the same as a diagnostic test?

No. A basic scan retrieves fault codes, but it does not necessarily determine why the code was stored. Professional diagnosis may involve reviewing live data, checking related components and following tests specific to the vehicle. That distinction can help avoid unnecessary parts replacement.

Why did my check engine light turn off by itself?

Some faults are intermittent, and the light may turn off after the system no longer detects the condition for a prescribed number of trips. Stored or historical fault information may still help diagnose what happened. If the light returns or the vehicle runs differently, arrange an evaluation.

Should I clear the code before bringing my vehicle in?

Usually, no. Clearing a code can erase freeze-frame or other useful diagnostic information without addressing the original issue. If you’ve already read the code, bring the code number and any notes about the symptoms to your appointment.

How much does check engine light diagnosis cost?

Diagnostic costs depend on the concern, vehicle and testing needed. Contact our Troy service team for current pricing and to discuss what a diagnostic appointment includes. Diagnosis and any subsequent repair may be separate services.

Do you diagnose check engine lights on Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles?

Yes. In addition to Buick and GMC, our service department specializes in Chevrolet and Cadillac vehicles. We also welcome nearly all other makes and models within our service capabilities. Provide your year, make and model when scheduling.

Can a loose gas cap cause a check engine light?

Yes, on vehicles that use a conventional fuel cap, a loose or damaged cap can cause evaporative-emissions monitoring faults. Other vehicles have capless fuel systems, and many different issues can set similar warnings. If the light persists, diagnostics can identify the relevant fault rather than guessing.

Will disconnecting my battery reset the check engine light?

On some vehicles, disconnecting the battery may clear certain stored information, but it does not correct the underlying problem. It can also reset readiness monitors and erase useful diagnostic clues. Have the cause investigated before clearing codes or disconnecting the battery.
