WHAT YOU MAY BE NOTICING

Four Signs Your Suspension or Steering Needs Attention

A symptom is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Tires, wheel alignment and suspension or steering components can produce overlapping concerns.

01 · RIDE QUALITY

Bouncing or excessive sway

Worn dampers can contribute to repeated bouncing or extra body movement. Springs and other parts can produce similar symptoms.

02 · SOUNDS

Clunks over bumps

Loose sway-bar links, worn mounts, bushings and joints are among possible causes. Where and when the noise occurs matters.

03 · STEERING

Loose, heavy or wandering steering

Steering-system wear, tire condition, alignment or assist-system faults may affect response and steering effort.

04 · TIRE WEAR

Uneven or cupped tread

Damping, alignment, inflation or worn joints can all contribute to abnormal tire wear patterns.

Safety first: If steering control suddenly changes or a wheel feels mechanically loose, stop safely and seek assistance rather than continuing to drive an unsafe vehicle.

UNDERSTAND THE PARTS

What’s Really Causing Your Rough Ride?

Replacing shocks does not automatically fix a clunk, and alignment alone cannot correct a loose joint. The right repair depends on identifying the component responsible.

Different components can create similar noises and ride symptoms.

Shocks and struts

Control spring movement; struts also provide structural support in certain suspension designs.

Ball joints, arms and bushings

Locate the wheels and allow controlled suspension movement. Wear may cause looseness, noise or changes in wheel positioning.

Tie rods and steering components

Transfer steering input to the wheels. Wear, damage or steering-assist concerns can affect control and feel.

A REASONED DIAGNOSIS

How We Find the Cause of Suspension & Steering Problems

A thorough evaluation is guided by the specific symptom and your vehicle’s equipment—not a one-size-fits-all parts list.

01

Pinpoint the symptom

Document when the vehicle shakes, clunks, pulls or feels unstable to focus the inspection.

02

Check mechanical condition

Assess applicable mounts, joints, bushings, springs, dampers and steering connections for wear or damage.

03

Evaluate related systems

Consider tires, wheel condition and alignment; equipped adaptive or electronic systems may need additional diagnostics.

04

Explain next steps

Discuss findings, component-specific repair recommendations and whether an alignment check is appropriate.

VEHICLE-SPECIFIC GM KNOWLEDGE

Your Buick or GMC Is Not One-Size-Fits-All.

A GMC Sierra used for towing, a Yukon with available adaptive suspension and a Buick Enclave have different designs, loads and service specifications.

Some Yukon configurations use Magnetic Ride Control or Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. Those features introduce additional components and control considerations that differ from conventional dampers.

CONNECTED, BUT DIFFERENT SERVICES

Repair the Cause. Then Address Alignment or Tire Wear.

A vehicle that pulls or wears tires unevenly doesn’t always need the same service. Mechanical play should be identified and repaired before relying on an alignment to correct the symptom.

Suspension & steering

Address worn joints, dampers, mounts or steering parts that may change vehicle control or wheel position.

Wheel alignment

Checks applicable wheel angles against specifications. Certain suspension repairs may require alignment afterward.

Tire condition

Tread wear, inflation and wheel condition can influence vibration, steering feel and traction.

SUSPENSION & STEERING FAQS

Suspension Questions, Answered.

Practical answers about handling changes, replacement decisions and what a repair may involve.

How can I tell whether I need shocks or struts?

Excessive bouncing, fluid leakage, unusually loose ride control or irregular tire wear can indicate damping problems. The same signs may also involve springs, tires or other components. The vehicle’s suspension design determines whether it uses shocks, struts or both.

What causes clunking when driving over bumps?

Possible sources include worn sway-bar links, mounts, bushings and ball joints. Because several parts can produce similar sounds, the location and timing of the noise should guide a mechanical inspection before replacing parts.

Can I drive with worn shocks or struts?

It depends on the severity of wear and whether other components are damaged. Reduced damping can affect handling and stability; a damaged or loose load-bearing suspension or steering part may make driving unsafe. If control feels compromised, stop safely and arrange assistance.

Should shocks and struts be replaced in pairs?

Replacing left and right dampers on the same axle is commonly recommended to maintain balanced damping. The correct recommendation depends on your vehicle, the parts involved and their condition; your technician can explain the options.

Will I need an alignment after steering or suspension repair?

Sometimes. Replacing tie rods, struts or certain control-arm components can change wheel geometry, making an alignment check or adjustment appropriate. A shock-only replacement may not affect alignment on some vehicles.

Why does my steering wheel vibrate or feel loose?

Wheel or tire imbalance, tire damage, worn steering linkage and suspension problems are among the possibilities. A vibration that appears at certain speeds may have a different cause from looseness during turns, so describe exactly when it occurs.

How often should shocks and struts be replaced?

There is no universal replacement mileage for every model. Driving conditions, wear, leakage, damage and manufacturer guidance matter more than a blanket interval. Have concerning ride or handling changes evaluated.

What affects suspension and steering repair cost?

The damaged component, vehicle design and required labor determine the cost. A conventional sway-bar-link replacement differs from work on struts or an electronically controlled suspension. Diagnosis identifies which repairs and related checks are actually needed.

Can suspension problems cause uneven tire wear?

Yes. Worn dampers, joints or bushings can contribute to irregular tread wear, but inflation, alignment and tire condition may also be involved. Correcting the cause helps avoid repeat wear after tire replacement.
