Tips On Improving Fuel Efficiency

Pumping Gas

Want the best tips on improving fuel efficiency? Be smooth with the accelerator, avoid harsh acceleration, and maintain the speed you’ve gained as much as is safely possible. Gas is wasted on jerky driving, and the smoother you drive, the less gas you’ll use. Looking for more ways to improve gas mileage around Dayton and Springfield? 5 Tips for Fuel-Saving Driving

Let’s get into the details!

  1. Accelerate Softly: Gentle throttle application, and reducing unnecessary acceleration, is the number one way to keep gas in your tank. Gas is used to get you moving, so maintaining that movement, not moving too much, and not needing to get moving again are the best ways to save gas.
  2. Plan Ahead for Traffic: Stop-and-go traffic is frustrating in enough ways already, not to mention the 0 mpg you get when the engine is on and you’re not moving. Adjust your departure times to avoid the worst of traffic, if possible.
  3. Avoid High Speeds: Aerodynamic drag causes cars to use more fuel when traveling at high speeds, especially above the highway speed limit. To achieve the best possible fuel economy on the highways, for example, keep your speed between 55 and 65 mph (just make sure you’re following the speed limit).
  4. Coast to a Stop: Rather than applying your brakes constantly, look at the road ahead. If there’s no one ahead of you and you need to come to a stop, take your foot off the gas pedal and let your car coast to a stop. How can you save fuel while driving on hills? Reduce your speed as you venture uphill, and again, use your car’s forward momentum to coast downhill.
  5. Use Air Conditioning Sparingly: Using the air conditioning system can increase your car’s fuel usage by up to 20%. When you turn the air conditioning on, use the recirculate function instead of leaving it on full-blast.
